About

Built by a lawyer who drafted the same document one too many times.

Word Merger comes from Celant Innovations — the maker of redlines.com and defcheck.com — and, like those tools, it exists because a repetitive piece of legal work deserved to be automated.

The story

Word Merger is designed by Jason Lee, who practiced law for about a decade before moving into technology. Much of legal drafting is form work: NDAs for a list of counterparties, engagement letters for new clients, certificates and consents for every signer in a closing set. The documents are identical except for the names, dates, and amounts — yet they are still often filled in by hand, one find-and-replace at a time, which is slow and an invitation for the wrong name to end up in the wrong document.

Word processors have had mail merge for decades, but it is buried, finicky, and tied to a desktop setup. Word Merger strips the task down to its essence: a template (or a ZIP of them) with placeholders, a spreadsheet with the values, and a button. It runs on the same serverless architecture as our other tools, which keeps distribution costs low enough to offer it free — and means your documents are processed ephemerally and never stored.

The Celant family

redlines.com — free document comparison. Generates a redline (blackline) showing every insertion, deletion, and movement between two versions of a document.

defcheck.com — patented defined-terms checking (U.S. Patent No. 10,713,482). Finds defined terms that are never used and capitalized terms that are never defined in contracts.

wordmerger.com — this tool. Fills Word templates with spreadsheet data, from a single letter to a folder-per-row batch of whole document sets.
